Programming note: NBC Sports Bay Area and NBC Bay Area will provide complete coverage of the 49ers’ season opener against the Rams in Melbourne, Australia, on Thursday, Sept. 10. First, tune in to NBC Sports Bay Area at 4:30 p.m. PT for “49ers Pregame Live.” Then, switch over to NBC Bay Area or Netflix at 5:30 p.m. PT for the game broadcast. As soon as the game ends, flip back to NBC Sports Bay Area for “49ers Postgame Live.”

Following the 49ers’ Week 1 matchup in Melbourne, Australia, against the Los Angeles Rams, San Francisco will host the Miami Dolphins on Sunday afternoon in Santa Clara.

However, according to coach Kyle Shanahan, he asked the NFL for the Monday night game in Week 2 to give the team an extra day of rest.

“We asked very nicely,” Shanahan told reporters on Tuesday night. “It didn’t work.”

Shanahan also told reporters it took him five days to get accustomed to the time change, so he expects his players to have enough time to recoup once they return to the Bay Area.

San Francisco will return from Australia on Friday. While the coaches have to be ready by Monday for game-planning and film, the players won’t practice until Wednesday, giving them five days between their Thursday night game and their first practice at home.

“You hope for as many days off between the two as you can have,” Shanahan said as he described the tumultuous early schedule.

To add insult to injury, the Rams were the lucky team chosen to play on Monday night in Week 2 as they’ll square off against the New York Giants.

One positive of the 49ers schedule, however, is that they play three straight games in Santa Clara following the Week 1 game in Australia, and their Week 5 game keeps them on the West Coast as they face the defending champion Seattle Seahawks.
