Sports ministry bans table tennis federation of India over governance issues
The Sports Ministry suspended the Table Tennis Federation of India, citing repeated “governance deficiencies.” One of the reasons cited by the ministry in its order was that TTFI failed to conduct elections on time, PTI reported.
“The IOA, in consultation with the international body (ITTF), will take appropriate action to create an internal regulatory mechanism, including the constitution of an ad-hoc committee, till such time that a duly constituted governance structure is restored in TTFI,” the ministry order stated.
Pinarayi alleges Kerala government got drug arrest posts removed
Former Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan alleged that the UDF government intervened to remove social media reports about the arrest of a person who allegedly claimed to be Kerala Chief Minister V D Satheesan’s social media coordinator in a drug case linked to Operation Toofan. Vijayan accused the government of censorship and demanded an explanation for the alleged removal of reports from platforms such as Facebook. He also alleged that the state government was receiving “indirect help” from the BJP-led Centre and compared the alleged action to restrictions imposed on social media content at the Centre’s request. His remarks came a day after the CPI(M) accused Satheesan’s office of links to a drug mafia, a charge the Congress has not accepted.
Karnataka Government’s tobacco ban
The Karnataka government has banned the sale and distribution of products containing tobacco and nicotine in the state for one year. The decision has been taken in the interest of public health.
The Supreme Court will hear Tamil Nadu’s plea seeking directions to Karnataka for the immediate release of its share of Cauvery water on 17 August. State Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, approached the Supreme Court on August 3 seeking directions to Karnataka for the immediate release of its due share of Cauvery water. The state claimed that Karnataka had released far less water than the 3500 cusecs ordered by the Cauvery Water Regulation Committee for 15 days from July 29. Tamil Nadu said Karnataka’s reservoirs had a combined storage of 77.537 TMC and argued that, based on recent rainfall, 26.954 TMC should have been released at Biligundlu, against the 4.536 TMC allocated by CWMA.
Tamil Nadu CM Vijay on Women’s reservation in Assembly
Tamil Nadu CM Vijay introduced a resolution in the Assembly on Wednesday asking to keep Lok Sabha strength fixed at 543 seats and implement 33 per cent women’s reservation in the 2029 elections based on the current seat count. The CM said reservation for women must not be delayed anymore and stated that “reservation for women is not a concession, it is their democratic right”.
Chandrasekaran to exit as Tata Sons chairman
N Chandrasekaran has decided to quit as chairman of Tata Sons, the principal holding company of the Tata Group. He will continue in the role until his current tenure ends in February 2027. His decision comes amid differences within Tata Trusts, which holds a 66% stake in Tata Sons, with trustees led by Chairman Noel Tata reportedly deciding against renewing his tenure.
Mumbai’s Kurla landslide
Two people are feared dead and others are suspected to be trapped after a landslide at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, Mumbai’s Kurla area, early Wednesday, officials said. The landslide took place near Rathod Medical at around 3.48 am after heavy rain. Rescue teams are at the spot and a search operation is underway.
Jharkhand protest: Over 200 ABVP activists detained in Ranchi
More than 200 ABVP activists, including three senior office-bearers, were detained in Ranchi on Tuesday while protesting the police action against students over alleged irregularities in government job exams. The protesters were stopped near the Old Assembly area while marching towards the new Assembly building and were taken away in different vehicles. ABVP said police used some force to stop the march but denied that there was a full-fledged lathi-charge. The detained activists were released after 9 pm.
