One former Alabama assistant coach revealed that Nick Saban warned him to keep Lane Kiffin “away from the sorority girls.”
The revelation is revealed in “Lane Being Lane,” a John Talty book about the former Alabama offensive coordinator and newest LSU coach.
An excerpt of the book from Kiffin’s time in Tuscaloosa under Saban, who is now a college football analyst for ESPN’s “College GameDay,” was shared with Vanity Fair.
The excerpt takes a look at 2015 and the unverified rumors of Kiffin being fired for an affair.
Kiffin, as the book points out, was not fired over an affair, but his off-the-field behavior didn’t go unnoticed by Saban.
Saban’s wife, Terry Saban, heard Kiffin, who separated at the time, was actively pursuing women. The result was Saban telling at least one staff member the following:
“You’ve got to keep Lane away from the girls that are in college,” Saban said, according to one former coach in the book. “Just keep him away from the sorority girls. Make sure they’ve graduated college or are working a job.”
The book shares the off-the-field behavior resulted in a disconnect between Saban and Kiffin.
“You have an interaction that is a little bit more contentious than you would hope,” one Alabama staffer told Talty, “and it creates more tension for the next potential event.”
The book also reveals Kiffin frequented Tuscaloosa-area bars.
“(Innisfree co-owner Derick) Purdy would call me and say, your boy Lane’s back in here asking where the hotties are,” Josh Booty told Talty. “‘Can you introduce me to hotties?’”
One of Kiffin’s friends said he was afraid the coach was going to “drink himself to death” because of distance to his family as well as the stress of the job.
“I’ve seen him on the floor crying like a goddamn baby,” the friend described.
