India have made a bright start to Day 4 of the Commonwealth Games, with Murali Sreeshankar, Sajan Prakash and Tejas Shirse all booking places in their respective finals. The only major setback came in the men’s 100m, where Gurindervir Singh suffered a surprise early exit.
Two-time Olympian Sajan Prakash qualified for the men’s 200m butterfly final after clocking 1:58.59 to finish second in his heat behind Scotland’s Duncan Scott. The 32-year-old advanced among the fastest qualifiers and will return later tonight in search of a medal.
In athletics, Murali Sreeshankar needed just one jump to seal his place in the men’s long jump final, clearing the automatic qualification mark with an effort of 8.01m. Tejas Shirse joined him in a final after clocking 13.76 seconds to finish third in his men’s 110m hurdles heat.
The biggest disappointment for India so far has been Gurindervir Singh. Hailed as India’s fastest man alive after his national-record 10.09 seconds earlier this year, the 25-year-old managed only 10.39 seconds in the heats, finishing 28th overall and missing out on the semi-finals.
With three Indians already through to finals and medal events still to come, Day 4 has given India plenty to cheer despite Gurindervir’s shock exit.
