Athletics: National record holder Gurindervir Singh kicks off day

India’s 100m national record holder Gurindervir Singh will kick off the country’s athletics campaign when he lines up in Heat 4 of the men’s 100m Round 1 at 2:40 PM IST.

India enjoyed a strong outing in weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow on Sunday, with three Indian lifters finishing on the podium.

Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu led the charge, winning gold in the women’s 48kg category to claim her third consecutive Commonwealth Games title. She finished with a total lift of 190kg, including 85kg in the snatch and 105kg in the clean and jerk, while also setting a Games record in the snatch.

Rishikanta Singh added silver in the men’s 60kg, finishing with a total of 264kg, while Muthupandi Raja also secured silver in the men’s 65kg with a combined lift of 286kg.

The three medals meant weightlifting accounted for all of India’s medals on Sunday, taking the country’s overall tally to four – one gold, two silver and one bronze. Jhandu Kumar had earlier won bronze in men’s heavyweight powerlifting.

India’s athletics campaign gets underway today, with a three-way contest in the men’s high jump final headlining the action. National record holder Sarvesh Kushare, Birmingham 2022 bronze medallist Tejaswin Shankar and Aadarsh Ram Jothi Shankar will all be in the fray.

Another national record holder, Tejas Shirse, begins his men’s 110m hurdles campaign in the heats, with the final scheduled later tonight if he progresses. 

On the field, 100m national record holder Gurindervir Singh runs his round 1 heat, while Commonwealth Games 2022 silver medallist Murali Sreeshankar begins his long jump campaign in qualifying alongside compatriot Lokesh Sathyanathan.

Weightlifting also offers three medal opportunities at the SEC Armadillo, with Gyaneshwari Yadav (women’s 53kg), Birmingham 2022 silver medallist Bindyarani Devi (women’s 58kg) and Valluri Ajaya Babu (men’s 79kg) all chasing podium finishes. 

India’s boxing campaign features four round of 16 bouts. Sachin Siwach (men’s 60kg), Ankush (men’s 80kg), Sakshi Chaudhary (women’s 51kg) and Sumit Kundu (men’s 70kg) will all step into the ring.

Swimming sees Olympian Sajan Prakash line up in the men’s 200m butterfly and Aryan Nehra contest the men’s 800m freestyle final. Para swimmer Swatik Patil will race in the men’s SB9 100m breaststroke, while India’s para athletes will also be in medal action in the women’s F57 shot put and men’s T38 100m.

With medals on offer across athletics, weightlifting, artistic gymnastics, swimming and para athletics, India will be aiming to build on its strong start to the Commonwealth Games 2026 campaign.
