Seventeen-year-old Thijs Boogaard will never forget his first-round match at the Libema Open.
The Dutchman became the second-youngest match winner in ‘s-Hertogenbosch tournament history on Wednesday when he battled past Wu Yibing 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in one hour and 55 minutes.
“It feels incredible to win my first match on the ATP Tour,” Boogaard said. “I’m very happy with my performance. I’m very happy with the win of course and the memory that will stick with me will be the moment that I won the last point, just the sigh of relief and the feeling that I got.”
Youngest ‘s-Hertogenbosch Match Winners
The wild card will face a big challenge in the second round, when he takes on former No. 1 player in the PIF ATP Rankings Daniil Medvedev. They have shared the practice court, and are familiar with one another, but this will be their first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting.
“To play Daniil over here in the Netherlands in front of the Dutch crowd is a very special feeling for me and I’m going to prepare as good as I can for the match and we’ll see what’s going to happen,” Boogaard said. “To have practised with Daniil before is obviously great for me. I can learn a lot of things from him because he’s obviously a great player and a former No. 1 in the world.
“In the practice sessions, I just see how accurate he is with every shot and that is definitely something I can learn from him.”
Tour-Level Wins By Players Born Since 2008
Boogaard began the week at a career-high World No. 779, and with his victory against Wu is up 147 spots to No. 632 in the PIF ATP Live Rankings. This was his second ATP Tour main draw match after falling to former World No. 3 Stan Wawrinka in Rotterdam earlier this year.
Second seed Alex de Minaur, who won the ATP 250 event in 2024, began his quest for another title with a 7-6(8), 7-5 victory against American qualifier Martin Damm. De Minaur awaits a Frenchman, either fifth seed Ugo Humbert or qualifier Benjamin Bonzi.
