Rahul Gandhi demands Amit Shah’s resignation over police brutality during Delhi protests

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, on Wednesday (July 29, 2026) blamed Union Home Minister Amit Shah for the recent police action on protesting students in Delhi. He also said that he was not allowed to speak in Parliament regarding the issue on Wednesday (July 29, 2026).

“As you have seen today, the Leader of the Opposition is not allowed to speak in the Lok Sabha. Multiple times I asked the Speaker to bring order to the House so that I could speak. Multiple times, Rijiju and Rajnath Singh were allowed to speak and I was not allowed to speak. And the excuse was that I said something about Amit Shah,” Mr. Gandhi said.

He again blamed Mr. Shah for the police brutality on the protesting students in Delhi. “I will never ever apologise to the BJP, RSS or any person associated with them. It is my right as the LoP to raise issues that are important for this country,” he said.

Displaying a picture of students injured during the protests, Mr. Gandhi said that pellet guns and batons with nails were used by the police during the protests. He claimed that one protester injured by pellet gun is “likely to lose” his eyesight. He also questions the presence of plainclothes officers among police during the protests. “To me, the brutalisation of our students, the beating of our students, the assault on our students is a fundamental issue, like it is for millions of people. Its an issue for the students themselves, who are being threatened today,” he said. “Face recognition is being used against them, Bajrang Dal is being mobilised against them to frighten them so that they do not do this type of thing again. So for me this is a primary issue,” he added.

“Any action that is taken by police forces or forces associated with the Home Ministry requires his order,” Mr. Gandhi said, blaming Mr. Shah for the police action.

‘Amit Shah must go’

When we were in Parliament House, I saw with my own eyes, Amit Shah calling the police officers. I saw Jitendra Singh getting call after call from Amit Shah. He (Amit Shah) was aware of what was going on,” Mr. Gandhi said.

Either Mr. Shah gave the orders for the police to use pellet guns and batons with nails, or he didn’t know it was happening. Mr. Shah is either culpable or incompetent and in either case he has to go, Mr. Gandhi says.

Addressing the students, he says: “This is the man who is responsible for what happened to you. Of course, he takes his orders from the Prime Minister. But this is the man who beat you, who thrashed you, who humiliated you and who shot you with pellet guns,” pointing to a picture of Mr. Shah.

Noting that the Delhi Police and the RAF both report to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), Mr. Gandhi said that the forces that beat students and “shot students with pellet guns” both report to Mr. Shah.

Mentioning his letter to Mr. Shah on July 25, 2026, Mr. Gandhi said that his questions have remained unanswered. “As Home Minister did you approve the use of lethal force, including pellet guns against students. If not, who did. Are the people in plainclothes seen beating students with lathis, police personnel or volunteers? Who authorised their deployment? Forget answers, I haven’t even got an acknowledgement that the letter has been received,” Mr. Gandhi said.

Sack Shah, order a probe

Mr. Gandhi said that the Congress will ensure that the beaten students will get justice. “We will ensure that the people who shot our students with pellet guns will be punished. It is very simple for us to do. We have collected all the videos and photographs. We know the police officers who have done it… But accountability is going to come. This is Opposition’s guarantee to the students,” he said.

He demanded that Mr. Modi sack Mr. Shah and order a probe monitored by an independent high powered committee of the Supreme Court. “At least have the decency to take responsibility for what you have done,” he said.
